Prof. Alex, Ph.D. Accent Coach, Doctor of Education, and professional linguist, developed Interactive American Accent Training from his doctoral research, which found interactive teaching more effective than traditional, teacher-centered teaching. Interactive teaching is a teaching method, so it can be applied to any subject. In Prof. Alex’s case, the subject is American accent training. The four teaching conditions identified in his research are the key elements that turn interactive teaching into Interactive American Accent Training: first, the student is active and speaks in situations from real work; second, the teacher’s role changes: in traditional teaching the teacher stands above the student as the only source of knowledge, while in interactive teaching Prof. Alex is an organizer and participant, a partner who trains together with the student and corrects each sound, word and sentence in real time; third, interactive methods are used in every session; and fourth, the course content is built for interactive learning, with practice material from the student’s field, recording review and self-assessment. The third condition, interactive methods, is why Prof. Alex created 2D Sound Motion Technology. Instead of traditional pictures or hand explanations, its Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators and voice-over instructions put students in active learning, so they train each American sound with more freedom and confidence.

This before-and-after comparison documents Abishek’s individual pronunciation development in MyAccentWay’s research-based pronunciation training, which incorporates educational conditions developed and investigated in Prof. Alex’s doctoral research. It is an individual student case, not part of the original experiment.
Teaching pronunciation around the world
Prof. Alex has always taught pronunciation, phonetics and the American accent. He taught diverse groups of students in departments of linguistics, interpretation and translation in the United States, Canada, Germany, India and Russia.
Along the way he found that professionals in the U.S. are a special group: they need to speak clearly, confidently and independently at the executive and CEO level.
Never a traditional teacher
Prof. Alex moved away from traditional, teacher-centered methods early in his career. He found that they did not keep students engaged. What drives him is the moment students become independent and confident English speakers. This is the same goal Prof. Alex’s doctoral research measured: students who stop depending on the teacher and take an active role in their own learning.
Prof. Alex wrote his doctoral research in his second language. Working abroad and learning teaching techniques different from his own was, in his words, a fascinating experience.
The doctoral research behind the method
Prof. Alex’s doctoral research studied interactive teaching in university English courses and compared it with traditional, teacher-centered teaching. The experimental teaching ran from 2011 to 2016 with 110 first-year university students. It included a pronunciation-focused online course, Practical English Phonetics.
The interactive and control groups started at the same level: 21% of the interactive group and 13% of the control group were at a high level of foreign-language competence. At the final stage, 75% of the interactive group (18 of 24 students) reached a high level, compared with 29% of the control group (7 of 24). The difference was statistically significant (Mann-Whitney U test, p ≤ .01). Students named communication, teamwork, public speaking and conversation as the most important skills they gained.

From four research conditions to accent training
Prof. Alex’s doctoral research identified four teaching conditions. Prof. Alex built Interactive American Accent Training on them.
| Condition in the research | How it works in accent training today |
|---|---|
| 1. Activating the student’s academic and professional activity | You speak for most of the session, in situations from your real work: meetings, presentations, calls. |
| 2. Shifting the teacher’s role from director to organizer and participant | In traditional teaching, the teacher stands above the student as the only source of knowledge. Here, Prof. Alex is an organizer and participant: he trains together with you as a partner, listens, and corrects each sound, word and sentence in real time. As Prof. Alex’s doctoral research puts it, in interactive learning “student activity takes the place of teacher activity.” |
| 3. Using interactive methods | Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators that train the speech organs for each American sound, plus live dialogue and role-play. |
| 4. Developing course content toward interactive learning | Practice material from your field, recording review and self-assessment. |
How the 2D simulators began
Prof. Alex always wanted to give students more freedom to explore their abilities. After he defended his doctoral research, he presented his interactive approach at a conference. A coworker whose hobby was 2D design heard the presentation and offered to create a simulator for one sound: the American voiceless [t].
The first version was, in Prof. Alex’s words, “pretty ugly.” They met over Zoom, and Prof. Alex corrected the movement of the speech organs step by step. That is how they began working on each American sound. They spent 2020 on this, and when it was done, the movement matched exactly what happens in American English.
Prof. Alex’s mother is German and does not speak English with an American accent. She tried the [t] simulator once, asked, “What is that, is that how Americans use the T sound?”, repeated the sound one time, and still pronounces it correctly today.
The key is not the simulator as a gadget. Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators are used as a teaching method: they move the student from a passive learner into an active learner who consciously controls the movements of the speech organs, produces each sound, and corrects it. In this way, the simulators put the third research condition, interactive methods, into practice.
2021: every sound ready
By 2021, simulators for all American sounds were ready, and Prof. Alex’s students were achieving clear results with them. He then added voice-over instructions so students could follow each sound more easily during class.
Students such as Tian, Abishek and Vlad trained this way. Their before-and-after recordings were scored by ChatGPT (100 = native speaker).

American English Pronunciation: Consonant and Vowel Sounds with 2D Sound Motion Technology
Learning American English pronunciation and the American accent is more effective when you train your speech organs, not only listen and repeat. 2D Sound Motion Technology and Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators, developed in 2020 by Prof. Alex, Ph.D. Accent Coach, Doctor of Education, and professional linguist, as part of his interactive teaching model based on his doctoral research in interactive teaching methods, train your tongue, lips, jaw, teeth, airflow, and voice step by step. They train each American sound and more than 30 sound combinations.
What 2D Sound Motion Technology is
2D Sound Motion Technology is an advanced accent reduction and articulation training tool by Prof. Alex. It corrects, develops, and trains each American sound and more than 30 sound combinations through Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators.
What Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators do
Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators are part of 2D Sound Motion Technology, the articulation-training method Prof. Alex created by applying his doctoral research in interactive teaching to American pronunciation. Instead of listening and repeating, students actively train their speech organs. Each simulator uses Interactive 2D mouth movement to train the speech organs (tongue, lips, jaw, teeth, airflow, and voice) to produce each American sound correctly. Every consonant has its own simulator: explore American consonants trained with 2D Sound Motion Technology.
Sample training: the American t sound (aspirated [t])
Practice
Record yourself speaking these words:
Tab · Tacos · Time · Tub · Hotel · Motel · Sit · Pit · Net
Instructions
Play the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulator for the American t sound below several times and follow it step by step. Move your tongue, jaw, and airflow together with the simulator and train your articulation.
Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulator: American unvoiced sound [t]
Practice
Record yourself again speaking these words, but this time focus on the movement of your tongue. Go slow, and you will hear the difference. You’ve got this!
Tab · Tacos · Time · Tub · Hotel · Motel · Sit · Pit · Net
How Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators solve pronunciation and speaking problems
- Wrong articulationMost pronunciation problems start with the tongue, lips, jaw, or teeth in the wrong position. Each Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulator trains the correct articulation of one American sound, so the student corrects the cause of the problem, not only the result.
- Airflow and voicingMany accent problems come from wrong airflow or voicing: sounds that are too weak, too strong, or voiced when they should be unvoiced. The simulators train airflow and voice together with articulation, step by step, for each American sound and more than 30 sound combinations.
- Clear speech and confidenceWhen each sound is trained correctly, words connect into clear American English speech. Listeners can understand you more easily, and speaking at work, in meetings, and on calls becomes more confident.
If you start hearing the aspiration, the short airstream after [t], with one simulator, you can only imagine how successful you can be in 1-on-1 Interactive American Accent Training with Prof. Alex, Ph.D. Accent Coach, where your whole American sound system is trained sound by sound.
In MyAccentWay, the Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators are only available in 1-on-1 accent coaching sessions with Prof. Alex.
What the research does and does not show
Prof. Alex’s doctoral research compared teaching methods, not brands. It found interactive teaching more effective than traditional, teacher-centered teaching. Interactive American Accent Training is informed by Prof. Alex’s doctoral research and applies its four conditions to pronunciation.
The Interactive Visual 2D Sound Simulators were created after Prof. Alex’s doctoral research, as a tool of the interactive method. They were not a separate subject of the research. MyAccentWay and InPronunci are brand names that apply this teaching approach, and they are not the subject of the research either.
